MEET OUR TEACHERS
Every week our teachers create opportunities for academic excellence and spiritual growth by establishing engaging environments where students feel safe, confident, and are inspired to learn. We have amazing instructors who have an abiding faith in Christ, are knowledgeable in their discipline, communicate effectively and deeply care for their students. They are dedicated to assisting parents in achieving excellence in homeschooling and helping students exceed their every expectation.
Mrs. Julie Wilson has been teaching at Veritas since 2012, but has been involved in the school since its inception as one of the four owners of Veritas Classical School SC. She teaches kindergarten at both campus locations and loves to watch “the light come on” in these little minds as they blossom through the year! Julie earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Georgia Southern University. She is an experienced homeschool mother, founding board member for Palmetto Christian Academy and previously taught pre-first enrichment class at PCA and was instrumental in developing the lower school curriculum. Also, for 12 years she worked at Christian World Adoption and was involved in educating and orienting new parents. Julie is married to Alan, mother to four girls and grandmother to twelve treasures! The Wilsons are members at East Cooper Baptist Church.
Mrs. Charity Light began teaching at Veritas in 2015 and teaches first grade at both campus locations. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Government and a Master of Arts in Teaching Elementary & Early Childhood Education from Liberty University. Previously, Mrs. Light taught second grade at Palmetto Christian Academy and has been a substitute teacher in local public school districts. She is married to Eric, with whom she has two boys, Jax and Jett. Their family attends Seacoast Mt. Pleasant.
Mrs. Kristi Combs began teaching for Veritas in 2018 and teaches second grade at both campus locations. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Emporia State University. Kristi has 21 years of homeschooling experience, in addition to many years teaching in public, private and homeschool enrichment settings. She is married to Fran and has three grown children and three grandchildren. They attend Crosstowne Christian Church in West Ashley.
Mrs. Sharon Gravely began teaching for Veritas in 2016 and teaches third grade at the Mt. Pleasant Campus. She attended Minnesota University and has homeschooled her four sons, two of whom are now adults. She is married to Randolph and their two youngest boys attend Veritas. The Gravely family worships at East Cooper Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant.
Mrs. Fairlight Kloxin began teaching at Veritas in 2020 and teaches third grade at the West Ashley Campus. She is a homeschool graduate herself and has been teaching her children at home since 2007. Fairlight has experience teaching and planning children's church curriculum, as well as teaching various subjects with homeschool co-ops. She and her husband, Michael, have three children, two of whom attend Veritas West Ashley. The Kloxin family attends Crosstown Christian Church in West Ashley.
Mrs. Jenni Cunningham began teaching at Veritas in 2012 and teaches fourth grade at the Mt. Pleasant Campus. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Bob Jones University. Previously, Jenni taught third grade for six years at Palmetto Christian Academy. She is married to Zach and they have three children. Their family attends King's Cross Church.
Mrs. Laura Herndon has taught fourth grade at the West Ashley Campus since 2018. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston. Previously, Laura has taught at a public elementary school and James Island Christian School. She is married to Paul and they have three children, two of whom attend Veritas West Ashley. The Herndon family worships at James Island Christian Church.
Mrs. Sharon Hawkins began teaching at Veritas in 2014 and teaches fifth grade at the West Ashley Campus. Sharon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Virginia Tech in Home Economics and Education. She has 25 years of homeschool experience, as well as experience developing co-op classes and teaching various women’s ministry events. Sharon is married to Jim and together they have seven grown children and four grandchildren. They are members of Risen Hope Church, where Jim serves as one of the pastors.
Fifth Grade & Spanish
Mrs. Jacqui Tabor began teaching at Veritas in 2013. She currently teaches fifth grade, Spanish 7th & 8th and Spanish 1 at the Mt. Pleasant Campus. Jacqui holds a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Master in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources from Louisiana State University. Previously, Jacqui worked as an independent contractor for Cengage Learning Publishing in the discipline of World Languages, which includes working with Spanish, Italian, German and French collegiate texts. She has served as an instructor for American Red Cross Lifeguard training. Mrs. Tabor has also contributed to ancillary materials for multiple online language learning programs with Cengage Learning. Jacqui is married to Andrew and together they have two children whom attend Veritas. They are members at Christ Church Anglican in Mt. Pleasant.
Mrs. April Moffatt has been teaching at Veritas since 2010 and teaches sixth grade at both campus locations. She has also overseen the incorporation of the IEW writing principals throughout the Veritas curriculum. April studied English and Political Science at Boise State University. She is married to John, and they have homeschooled their four children for the past 20+ years, all of which have graduated from or still attend Veritas. The Moffatt family attends New Day Community Church.
Seventh & Eighth Grade
Mrs. Ashley Grooms taught at Veritas in 2012 and then returned in 2016. She currently teaches 7th & 8th grade English Literature at both campus locations. Ashley earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Religion from Wake Forest University, and a Master of Arts in English Language and Literature from the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Grooms has also worked as a Reading Specialist at Palmetto Christian Academy and an English 101 instructor at the University of South Carolina. She is married to Thomas, who works at Blackbaud, and together they have four children. The Grooms family worships at East Cooper Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant.
Seventh & Eighth Grade
Rev. Darien Gabriel began teaching 7th & 8th grade History, Bible and Logic in 2018 at both campus locations. Darien holds a Civil Engineering degree from Clemson and a Master of Divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has been in pastoral ministry since 1998 and has also taught adjunctly at Charleston Southern University. He is married to Anita and has four grown daughters, all of whom they homeschooled. Darien and his family attend Grace Christian Fellowship in Ladson, where Darien serves as one of the pastors.
Seventh & Eighth Grade
Rev. Mark Timmons began teaching at Veritas in 2015 and teaches 7th & 8th grade Bible, History and Logic at both campus locations. Mark earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the College of Charleston and a Master of Divinity from Southern Seminary. Previously, Mark worked at a classical, Christian school in Kentucky for three years. He and his wife, Libbie, have five children, three of whom attend Veritas West Ashley. They are members at Friendship Baptist Church in Park Circle, where Mark serves as one of the pastors.
Mrs. Kimberly Wilber began teaching at Veritas in 2014 and teaches high school English Literature, Language and Composition at both campus locations. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Indiana University (Bloomington, IN) and a Master of Arts in Special Education from the University of Tennessee. Kimberly taught middle school special education resource and self-contained classrooms for three years, and has also homeschooled her own children for 12 years. She and her husband Steve have two children in college. They attend Seacoast Church in Mount Pleasant.
Rev. Alan Wilson has taught at Veritas since it began in 2007. Currently, he teaches high school History, Bible and Rhetoric at both campus locations. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Georgia Southern University. Alan also holds a Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary and has done doctoral work at Reformed Theological Seminary. Previously, he taught high school at Mount Vernon Christian Academy (Atlanta, Georgia) for eight years while serving as Assistant Headmaster. Alan was Pastor of Education and Teaching Ministry at East Cooper Baptist Church twelve years and served as Senior Pastor of Sullivan’s Island Baptist Church six years before starting Veritas. He and his wife, Julie, were founding board members for Palmetto Christian Academy in Mount Pleasant, where he also served as interim Headmaster two years. Alan was Adjunct Professor of Freshman Seminar and Learning Strategies at the College of Charleston eight years and taught Old Testament at Charleston Southern University three years. Alan and Julie homeschooled their children several years in the early days of the homeschool movement. They have four children and twelve grandchildren (all of whom are homeschooled). The Wilsons are members of East Cooper Baptist Church.
Ms. Rebecca Gooden has taught at Veritas since 2014 and teaches 7th Grade Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 at both campus locations. Rebecca earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has done graduate studies at Gardner Webb University and Virginia Commonwealth University. She taught in public schools for 26 years, a private school for two years and also has done private math tutoring for 10 years. Rebecca has two grown daughters, Corinne and Cara, and four grandchildren. She attends Palmetto Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant.
Mrs. Joan Ilagan began teaching at Veritas in 2018 and teaches Chemistry at the West Ashley campus. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Auburn University and a Master of Teaching Biology from The Citadel. Previously, she taught Biology and Chemistry at Summerville High School and taught various levels of science at a homeschool co-op. She also works a a science tutor. Joan and her husband, Danny, have four daughters, whom them have homeschooled. Their family worships at St. Paul's Anglican in Summerville.
Mr. Jim Koenig began teaching at Veritas in 2009 and teaches Elementary Science , General Science and Biology at both campuses. Jim received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and education certificate from the College of Charleston. He is Owner of King Fish Environmental, which provides hands-on environmental education to all age groups. He spent several years developing and leading the Nature Program for Kiawah Island Resort. Most recently he spent thirteen years as Director of the Barrier Island Environmental Education Center on Seabrook Island, where he developed educational classes. Jim and his wife, Janet, have two daughters. Kari graduated from Veritas in 2017 and Daisy is in the high school program at Veritas. The Koenig family attends Seacoast Church in Mt. Pleasant.
Mrs. Emily Parrish joined the Veritas faculty in 2015 and teaches Saxon 1 and Saxon 3 at the Mt. Pleasant Campus. She graduated from Winthrop University with a Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance. Emily and her husband, Justin, have two daughters. They are members at Two Rivers Presbyterian in Park Circle, where Justin serves on staff as Director of Worship and Media.
Mrs. Amanda Reinhardt began teaching at Veritas in 2020 and teaches General Science at the West Ashley Campus. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the Medical College of George. Amanda has experience as a homeschool mother and has enjoyed teaching and exploring the world of science through co-ops with other homeschool families. She and her husband, Brian, have four children, the oldest two attend Veritas West Ashley. The Reinhardt family worships at Citadel Square Baptist Church in downtown Charleston.
Mrs. Laurie Tackett began at Veritas in 2018 and teaches Physical Science at the West Ashley Campus. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Master of Health Science - Occupational Therapy. Previously, she has taught biology & physical science in homeschool co-ops and served as an adjunct instruction at MUSC. She and her husband, Claude, have four children and are long time Veritas parents. Their family attends East Cooper Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant.
Mrs. Rebecca Taylor began teaching at Veritas in 2008 and teaches Saxon 7/6, 7th Grade Math and Pre Algebra at the West Ashley Campus. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Veterinary Medicine from Clemson University. She is married to Lee and has three children, whom also attend Veritas West Ashely. The Taylor family worships at East Cooper Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant.
Mrs. Ruthie White began at Veritas in 2019 and teaches Saxon 6/5 at the West Ashley Campus. She homeschooled one of her two children during high school, and now has the privilege of watching all ten of her grandchildren being homeschooled - four of them as Veritas students! Ruthie is married to Michael, and they are members at Risen Home Church in Summerville.
Dr. Gabriel Williams began teaching at Veritas in 2015 and teaches Chemistry and Physics at the Mt. Pleasant Campus. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics from Morehouse College, a Master of Science in Physics from the University of Texas-Brownsville and a Doctorate in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University. Dr. Williams also serves as Associate Professor of Atmospheric Physics at the College of Charleston. For information on his publications and research, see his faculty research page. He is married to Alicia, with whom he has two children. The Williams are members at Christ Church Presbyterian in Mt. Pleasant.
Mr. Andrew Tabor, who was born in Rota, Spain, has been teaching at Veritas since 2013 and teaches Spanish 2 and Spanish 3 at the Mt. Pleasant Campus. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Education from Shippensburg University, a Master of Arts in Methodology and Second Language Acquisition from the University of Southern Mississippi and has completed doctoral course work in Educational Technology at Louisiana State University. He has also studied at the University of Salamanca in Spain. Previously, Mr. Tabor taught high school for two years and has taught 20+ years at the university level. Additionally, Mr. Tabor does extensive publishing for his current position at Cengage Learning and within the discipline of World Languages. He has also contributed multiple publications within the field of Education Technology. Andrew is married to Jacqui and together they have two girls, who attend Veritas. The Tabor family attends Christ Church Anglican in Mt. Pleasant.
Justin has led our chapel gatherings for several years and began teaching math at the Mount Pleasant campus in 2020. He graduated with honors at Charleston Southern University with a BA in Music & Worship Leadership. Justin has been the worship and media director at Two Rivers Presbyterian Church (PCA) since 2014 and teaches private music lessons. He and his wife, Emily (another Veritas educator), have two daughters and a hound dog.
